Celebrating 115 Years of Ballistol Army Oil
The Story
Around the turn of the 20th century the Imperial German army was in need of a universal firearm cleaning oil. It had to be suitable for maintaining the metal parts of their guns. It also had to preserve the wooden stocks and their leather boots, slings and saddles. Simultaneously, it had to serve the soldiers as a dressing for minor injuries, lacerations and bruises. In short They needed a ‘wonder oil’.
It was Dr. Helmut Klever, then lecturer for chemistry at the Technical University of Karlsruhe, son of the founder of the Chemical Plant, who succeeded in finding the formula for a special oil. He coined the name BALLISTOL by combining the technical term ballistics and the Latin word for oil, oleum and the name Ballistol was born.
The “Wonder Oil”
After a very short while Ballistol began to establish itself as a “wonder oil“ .This was because of its incredible and often miraculous abilities. Used by the German Army from 1905 to 1945 the brand name BALLISTOL has survived all the historical turbulence of the last century to become a watchword for hunters, shooters, anglers and many more. Definitely a ‘wonder oil’.
It is no exaggeration to claim that BALLISTOL has become a synonym for quality. To celebrate the longevity of this amazing product Ballistol have released a vintage labelled pack.
